Training and Development Workshops

Graphics

(VISTA Consulting & Don Braisby - organised by PinPoint)

Graphic recording is a helpful tool to facilitate the work of many different types of groups working on complex problems. A well-executed graphic display supports people to work more effectively, efficiently and creatively.

Why not enhance your skills as a leader of change and/or improvement facilitator by using powerful visual images to

  • Get back in touch with your natural ability to say things with pictorial images
  • Learn to communicate ideas quickly with simple powerful pictures
  • Practice listening for key words and concepts and translate them into graphic images
  • Plan and use prepared templates on which to organise information
  • Develop a set of customised images for use in training, and when facilitating or recording meetings
  • Practice recording ideas, conversation and meetings with both words and pictures
  • Support and help groups achieve their desired future

The workshop is highly experiential, lively and creative for people who wish to unlock the basic skills needed to use visual language in their personal world, presentations and team development. Every participant will receive a personal toolkit for graphic facilitation. Dress code is very relaxed and informal!

Other Workshops

The following workshops are run on an ad-hoc basis as demand dictates. We do not have a formal programme but will set up the workshops when enough clients / public send us their requests. Please contact 01527 837930 or email enquiries@vista.uk.com to let us know you are interested

Large Group Engagement

A powerful two-day workshop that discovers the strength, possibilities and practicalities of large-scale engagement.

  • Can your organisation stimulate and foster the genuine involvement of large numbers of people to bring about change?
  • How do you work with multiple stakeholders and other organisations to build sustainable partnerships and better networks?
  • How can a whole organisation or parts of an organisation learn together, share knowledge and create new knowledge?
  • How is it possible to work with and involve large numbers of people in key strategic issues?

This workshop programme offers a powerful set of tools and techniques to help you engage huge numbers of people in the process of change. These tools help to develop new approaches to leadership and increase the likelihood of success from many modernisation/change efforts.

It will help you to:

  • Understand and appreciate the possibilities of large group engagement to support change
  • Identify practical tools and frameworks that will add value to the knowledge and skills you already possess and engage your current capabilities in this area
  • Start to think through the potential for how large group approaches could be used to further advance your change/modernisation programme

How many people can take part?

The workshop can accommodate 25-100 people at a time. The higher the number, of delegates - the more staff to help with one-to-one coaching.

How long is the workshop

There is a two-day and a five-day version. The two-day version starts at 9.30 am and closes at 4.30 pm. The weeklong experience starts at 11.00 am on day 1 through to 1.00 pm on day 5.

We organise this workshop when we have sufficient demand. For the 5-day version we had 4 clients who each sent one or two teams of six people. For the two-day version, Roffey Park requested we run this and we have run it for our clients.

You can place you name on a waiting list (contact enquiries@vista.uk.com) and we will let you know if we've got anything planned or, why not generate interest in your own organisation or the networks you belong to.

What's included?

Everything you need including workbook and handouts, a copy of our book 'Meetings by Design' and 'design cards' for you to use when planning events back home.

Large Group Interventions

- Engaging the Whole System for Rapid Change

The workshop is a presentation by Billie Alban and Barbara Bunker of the important design elements of the twelve major large group intervention methodologies. It is for change agents, managers, consultants, administrators, officials and community leaders who want an in-depth look at Large Group Interventions.

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Examine twelve major methods for large group interventions
  • Understand the similarities and differences in the major methods
  • Learn how and when to use large scale/group interventions
  • Explore the critical contracting issues for using large group methods and learn a different consultative role
  • Understand the difference between large and small group dynamics

Billie and Barbara use a variety of methods in the workshop:

  • Presentations with supporting take home materials
  • Videotapes of real large group events
  • Discussion and table-group activities typical of large group events
  • Real cases - yours and ours
  • Simulations of large group dynamics

And there will be lots of interactions, both in sessions and informally

In 1992, Billie Alban and Barbara Bunker edited a special issue of The Journal of Applied Behavioural Science on Large Group Interventions. Their book on this topic "Large Group Interventions - Engaging the Whole Organization for Rapid Change" was published in October 1996 (by Jossey Bass).

How many people can take part?

The workshop can accommodate 25-50 people at a time.

How long is the workshop?

2 ½ days running from 9.00am to 5.30pm on days 1 and 2 and from 9.00am to 1.00pm on day 3. Residential accommodation is not essential.

What's included?

All materials including workbook and copy of Billie and Barbara's book - Large Group Interventions.

Future Search

In collaboration with Marvin Weisbord and Sandra Janoff, VISTA will organise this workshop bi-annually if demand exists.

Marvin Weisbord and Sandra Janoff, Ph.D., are authors of FUTURE SEARCH: An Action Guide to Finding Common Ground in Organizations and Communities (Berrett-Koehler, 1995). Together they have nearly 60 years of professional group leadership experience. Marv and Sandra are co-directors of Future Search Network, a non-profit voluntary association of 500 practitioners' worldwide dedicated to learning, colleagueship, and community service.

Future search is a planning meeting that enables a system to transform its capability for action in a very short time. The meeting is task-focused and brings together 60-70 people assumed to have a stake in the future of "X". They stay engaged for 16 hours across 3 days. People explore their past, present and desired future, discover common ground, and make concrete action plans.

Future search is purposeful, requires no expert speakers and encourages dialogue and learning as a catalyst for action and follow-up. As people build a community based on a motivating goal and a shared appreciation of the "whole elephant" they may devise new forms of co-operative action that will persist for months or years.

Broad Applications - Future search can be used to:

  • Create a shared vision and practical action plans among diverse parties
  • Build commitment to implement a vision or strategy that already exists
  • Initiate rapid action on complex issues where no co-ordinating structure or shared vision exists.

The workshop is built around a simulated Future Search. The purpose and stakeholder roles are chosen by the whole group as part of the learning design. People then have a basis for a shared experience with the techniques for building community, helping a diverse group develop a mutual worldview, creating desired futures, establishing common ground, expanding the range of choices and moving into action. Included are interactive sessions on planning, facilitation and follow up.

How many people can take part?

The workshop requires 50 to 70 people to make it learning-viable.

How long is the workshop?

Three-days

What's included?

All handouts, materials and workbook. Copies of Future Search books, information on the Future Search Network and other resources are available to purchase during the workshop

Polarity Management

In collaboration with Dr. Barry Johnson (www.polaritymanagement.com). Barry is the author of "Polarity Management - Identifying and Managing Unsolvable Problems". He also works with organisations to identify and manage issues where there are no apparent "right" answers.

We know that some of our friends and colleagues may have already seen this user-friendly way of dealing with the polarities in organisations (and life) and are keen to learn more.

For those of you who are new to this, an example of a polarity is breathing - the cycle of breathing in, and breathing out, is a polarity that we all subconsciously manage thousands of times every day.

But how does that translate into business/ organisations? Polarities are ongoing, chronic issues that are unavoidable and unsolvable. Attempting to address them with traditional problem solving skills only makes things worse.

In organisations we are constantly asking ourselves how do we manage what we see as the problem between competition and collaboration, centralisation and decentralisation, rigid structures and flexibility? These can in fact be seen as polarities to manage, not problems to be solved.

At this workshop you will:

1.Learn

  • The value of 'either /or thinking'
  • The value of 'both/and thinking
  • To distinguish between either/or problems you can solve and both/and polarities you must manage
  • How polarities look and how they work

2.Which will help improve your effectiveness in

  • Handling complexity
  • Addressing "wicked" problems
  • Reducing resistance to change
  • Capitalising on diversity
  • Intervening in conflicts between individuals or groups
  • Creating long term, effective change

3.So that at the end of the workshop

  • You will have one or more intervention plans for key improvement initiatives you are working on

How many people can take part?

The workshop can accommodate 30-50 people at a time.

How long is the workshop?

There is a one-day version and a two-day version. The days start at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm

What's included?

Everything you need including workbook. Details of how to purchase the Polarity Management computer program will be available.

Organisation Workshop

This workshop sets a down-to-earth tone by connecting with life in your organisation as you experience it. It's not just theoretical chatter; you actually live through experiences that make theories and solutions real. Even self-confessed sceptics say how much they have enjoyed and learned from this workshop.

The workshop is designed so you will:

  • Be more in touch with issues others in the organisation are facing and more able to deal with them constructively.
  • Work more effectively up, down and across your organisation's lines.
  • Have the ability to break down bureaucratic barriers to create exciting new partnerships.
  • Be able to provide leadership that addresses issues systemically rather than personally.

Let us bring the power of this dynamic and engaging experience into your organisation!

  • As a module in a leadership or management development programme
  • As a way to
    • Energise performance
    • Improve cross functional working
    • Strengthen the much maligned and vital middle level
    • Support the living of organisational values
    • Develop collaborative and empowered cultures

What is it?

The core of the in-house workshop is:

  • An organisation into which participants are dropped in roles as top executives, middle managers, workers and customers. They then operate in a chaotic, fast-moving environment.
  • These high-energy exercises are complemented by practical strategic frameworks based on the work of Barry Oshry to help participants make sense of what is happening and make connections to their own organisation.
  • This approach enables the learning to really hit home and stick!!

What will we get out of it?

Participants will:

  • Understand the differing 'worlds' of tops, middles, workers and customers and develop ways of dealing with them constructively
  • Recognise the multiplicity of roles they sometimes play as tops, middles, workers and customers
  • Work more effectively across your organisation, creating partnerships with peers and breaking down bureaucratic barriers
  • Provide leadership that addresses issues systemically rather than personally

and

  • Feel more able to make things happen!

How many people can take part?

The workshop can accommodate 25-50 people at a time. The Jumbo Organisation Workshop can accommodate up to 150 participants. In this version two organisations, each with their own executives, middle managers and workers, compete for the business of several customers.

How long is the workshop?

Although originally designed as a two-day programme, for those with limited time, we can shorten this to a one-day workshop. We will work with you to ensure that you get what you want out of the Workshop within the time you have available.

What's included?

Everything you need including all stationery, handouts and materials. This workshop has specific requirements in terms of space, layout and numbers of delegates.

Change Management

This is an in-house workshop we design with clients specific to their needs. The range of materials we cover really depends on the skills within the organisation. We would work with a small group of people from the organisation to enable us to gather 'their' data and build the design.

An example of what this might look like is:

  • The first day would look at change from an organisational (system) perspective and would cover pressures that drive change, stages of organisational change, looking for signs of resistance (yours and theirs!).
  • At the end of the first day we would move to dealing with change from a personal perspective. How do people experience change in an organisation, how do you cope with change. This would include understanding behaviours; effect on the loss of self-esteem (i.e. what people lose as well as gain at times of change). Potential traps when promoting change e.g. trying to go too far too fast, ignoring resistance - what are the signs to look for? The role of change agents both in advising others and in acting as role models

How many people can take part?

The workshop can accommodate 10-50 people at a time although you could run it with as many as 100 people. This would require more staff to enable small group coaching.

How long is the workshop?

Two days from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm.

What's included?

All handouts, materials and workbook.

Mix 'n' Match

Some clients have asked us for a varity of workshops to match the needs of their organisation. For example, we have put together packages that include:

  • Large Group Engagement - two-day workshop to learn powerful new tools and techniques for large group engagement
  • Graphic Facilitation - a one-day practical 'hands-on' graphic workshop
  • Polarity Management - a new tool for the organisation

If you would like to discuss the range of workshops we can organise in-house then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01527 837930 or email enquiries@vista.uk.com

Over the years we have organised workshops on practically all aspects of large group engagement including methodologies such as the Confernce Model, Real Time Work Design, Facilitating the Whole System in the Room and many more. If an organisation would like to run a workshop but doesn't think they can fill it, then we have creative solutions that we can talk to you about.
